And This Year’s Art Award Goes to…

On June 15, 2018, we’re setting the breakfast table and preparing to welcome leading members of Surrey’s arts community in celebration of the second annual Surrey Mayor’s Art Awards ceremony. The morning event, hosted by the Surrey Board of Trade, will see winners in the categories of Philanthropy, Legacy, Arts Ambassador and Arts & Innovation announced by Mayor Linda Hepner. The awards honour those who have made the most significant contributions to the city’s liveability by enriching its cultural diversity.

Guests arriving for the Mayor’s Arts Awards event can warm up by taking a look at our in-house commissioned art program featuring BC’s people and landscapes as interpreted through sculpture, digital installations and photography. While murals, encaustic pieces and photographs can be found in the guest rooms and lobbies of each of the 16 guest floors, several are located in the main lobby and may be viewed by members of the general public.

Launch, a stunning piece by contemporary figurative sculptor David Robinson, is suspended dramatically above the staircase up to the event floor. Another is Signals, a multi-phased digital art installation by Nicholas Sassoon and Rick Silva, part of our Connectify Collaborative Digital Art Program curated by Kate Armstrong of Emily Carr University of Art and Design. This installation is located in our co-working business lounge.

By helping inspire our guests and visitors to connect in new ways with the represented communities, environments and cultural interpretations, our growing art program can play a role in the kinds of innovative partnerships, technologies and designs happening all around us in City Centre. These connections are certainly one of the most exciting parts of providing hospitality in a place that is rapidly becoming Metro Vancouver’s next-generation hi-tech hub.

Providing a beautiful venue for this exciting and highly anticipated event also plays into our location on Civic Plaza, situated within the city’s designated Cultural Corridor. You’ll find a growing number of creative enterprises developing innovative technologies in film and digital arts. Academic institutions like Simon Fraser University and Kwantlen Polytechnic University are forging the next generation of artists by training them in traditional practices and performing arts as well as in cutting-edge digital and interactive media.

So make sure to put this event in your calendar. We’ll have plenty of hot, fresh coffee and tasty breakfast fare to fuel the conversations amongst everyone from the most established artists to emerging talent, entrepreneurs and those who fund and administer performances, exhibits and arts programming. And we’ll raise a cup to the artists and organizations helping make Surrey one of Canada’s most diverse, liveable and culturally connected communities.
